Abercrombie Admits Failure

Abercrombie Admits Failure,
Celebrity Journalist: I Never Spoke to Hawaii Gov About Obama Birth Certificate

A celebrity journalist now claims he misspoke when he said last week that Hawaii’s governor told him he was unable to find President Barack Obama’s original birth certificate after a search of state and hospital archives.

Mike Evans told FoxNews.com on Wednesday he was remorseful and embarrassed that he appeared to have given the impression that he had discussed the search for Obama’s birth certificate with Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie.

Evans, who says he has been a close friend of Abercrombie since the 1980s, appeared on Minnesota’s KQRS radio last week and said he’d been told by the governor himself that Obama’s birth certificate was nowhere to be found. Evans told KQRS on Jan. 20:

"Yesterday, talking to Neil's office, Neil says that he searched everywhere using his powers as governor ..... there is no Barack Obama birth certificate in Hawaii. Absolutely no proof at all that he was born in Hawaii."

But that’s no longer Evans’ story.

“Only this I can you tell you is 100 percent fact: that Neil never told me there was no birth certificate,” Evans told Fox News. “I never talked to him.”

Last week’s radio interview was part of Evans’ syndicated five-minute feature, “On the Road with Mike Evans,” which is broadcast on 34 stations across the country each morning.

On the morning of Jan. 20, Evans says he accidentally told one of those radio stations -- KQRS -- that he’d spoken directly with Gov. Abercrombie about the Obama birth certificate.

“I was on 34 radio stations that morning. That was the only station where I said, instead of saying ‘the hospital said there’s no birth certificate’ I misspoke and said Neil said that,” Evans said. “I misspoke and I apologize for that. I apologize to Neil.”

Abercrombie’s spokeswoman did not respond to Fox News e-mail and phone requests for comment.

Evans says he first noticed the story on Jan. 18, when he was reading an online article with the headline, “Hawaii governor can't find Obama birth certificate.” The article cites an interview with a former Honolulu elections clerk who says records of Obama’s birth could not be found at either Honolulu hospital.

“Halfway down the story it said the long form certificate was not on file at the two hospitals,” Evans said. “It says the hospitals say there’s no birth certificate and says Neil says he couldn’t find it.”

Evans said he continued reading other reports online, including one that quotes a former Honolulu election official as saying no hospital has been able to find Obama’s original long form birth certificate.

Evans says he then placed a call to Abercrombie’s office in Hawaii to follow up on the reports.

“I called Neil, but Neil never called me back,” Evans told Fox News. “I haven’t talked to Neil since he’s been governor.”

In 2008, the Obama campaign provided a certification of live birth -- a shorter form document that bears the same legal weight as the more detailed original certificate of live birth -- to prove his eligibility to be president. That has not quelled calls by those who have asked for the president’s original, longer form birth certificate, which they maintain would more clearly prove his status as a natural-born American citizen.

The U.S. Constitution stipulates that only “a natural-born citizen,” or a citizen of the United States at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of the President.”

Al Davis press-conference primer

An Al Davis press-conference primer: A whole lot to talk about, right AD?

4:48 p.m. update: It’s official. Hue Jackson is the new Raiders coach and will be introduced at a press conference tomorrow.

* Great point by Lowell Cohn: Yes, Mike Martz’s cool, calm running of the Bears’ offense is more proof of Mike Singletary’s limited vision. I doubt Singletary and Martz could’ve co-existed over any long-term period, but Singletary’s dispatching of Martz–and subsequent hiring of Jimmy Raye–was the biggest staff error of Singletary’s struggling tenure.

.

And all those down-field passes to Greg Olsen vs. Seattle yesterday? I thought Martz didn’t use the tight end. That was positively Harbaugh-like, and I mean that in a good way

-Looks like Al Davis will be hiring Hue Jackson (or Mystery Candidate) any day now–tomorrow maybe?–and that means there will be a news conference to announce it.

With Al Davis as the centerpiece, dominant voice, feistiest presence and living icon. Most entertaining events in Bay Area sports, by the way.

Everybody else will just be a prop, up to and including Jackson. As is every coach next to Al, or beneath Al, or being fined by Al, or being yelled at by Al.

Just thought I’d toss out an AD Presser cheat-sheet, as we expectantly await Al’s first full-fledged media appearance since Sept. 30, 2008–the day he fired Lane Kiffin and promoted Tom Cable to interim coach.

Remember, in that time span, the man who emodies everything about the franchise–he’s the owner-president-GM-personnel director-PR director–has not explained his thoughts on:

-The end of JaMarcus Russell’s Raiders career;

-The acquisition of Richard Seymour;

-The acquisition of Jason Campbell;

-The Raiders great 2010 draft class;

-The victory in Kiffin’s grievance arbitration;

-The continued fizzle of Darrius Heyward-Bey;

-The break-out of Darren McFadden;

-The renaisssance of Tommy Kelly;

-The voiding of Nnamdi Asomugha’s contract;

-The comments criticizing the organiztion by Shane Lechler after the Cable dispatching;

You add whatever Al’s going to say about his reasons for dumping Cable and hiring Jackson/Mystery Candidate, and that’s a lot to talk about.

And there’s nobody better–actually there is NOBODY ELSE–to do it than AD.

Some other points…

* Presuming the hire is Jackson, this is another confirmation of the Al Davis Coaching-Hiring Code.

-Since the late-1980s, Al has rigidly alternated between burly offensive line coach (like Art Shell or Tom Cable) and offensive strategist (like Lane Kiffin or Jackson), time and again.

Jackson would be the 11th consecutive iteration of that pattern.

I’d say he has a bettter shot at it than Norv Turner and Kiffin, since Jackson has been in the system for a year and also has a much more vibrant personality than those two gameplanners, which is partly what seems to attract Al to the OL types.

But he also likes the gameplanners. Once he gets tired of the OL types (like Cable). Then he gets tired of the OL types…

* Here’s what I wrote in 2008, summarizing the code and the Al Davis double-presser in 2008, which also included an overhead projector I seem to recall.

* It’s always amusing to go back on the things Al gets mad at, in real time. Here’s the chat after the Lane Kiffin/Tom Cable double-session.

* More from the Lane Kiffin hiring: Deng Xiaoping, Lane Kiffin, Al Davis and me.

As a recent Tweet-responder reminded me, the funniest part of this item (now) is the series of angry Raiders-fan comments on the bottom, furious at me because I dared to question Al about the wisdom of hiring Kiffin.

* The Rustling Ratto, summing it up better than I ever have: Al Davis hates his head coaches.

Zack Greinke takes a break Gil Meche

Zack Greinke takes a break from vacation to talk about his friend Gil Meche

You probably know that Gil Meche decided to retire, but if you’re like me you’re still stunned he’s walking away from $12.4 million. It’s a fascinating story, as I wrote this morning the man is once again by defined by money — but this time it’s on his terms.

Meche made the 2007 All-Star team and finished fifth in strikeouts the next year, but as far as contributions to the Royals*, his legacy may be as Zack Greinke’s big brother. GM Dayton Moore has always credited Meche’s presence for allowing Greinke to “blend in,” and draws a direct connection to Zack’s success in 2008 and 2009. * Of course, besides the money, Meche’s time in Kansas City will be remembered for his 132-pitch complete game against Arizona in June 2009. The story’s been told plenty, but then-manager Trey Hillman wanted to go to the bullpen after eight innings, but Meche essentially vetoed him. He got the shutout, but was never the same, the Royals completely mismanaging Meche after that. As obvious as the connection is, Meche has always defended Hillman and said the extra pitches had nothing to do with his failing health. Of course, it’s in Meche’s self-interest for that to be the case, too.

You don’t have to believe that (I tend to think it had more to do with Zack’s talent), but Moore does, and more importantly, Zack does, too. The Star’s badass Royals beat writer Bob Dutton reached Zack on vacation yesterday for a short conversation. The first quote here appeared in Terez Paylor’s story. The last one is pure Zack.

Anyway, here’s Zack on getting help from Meche:

“Gil definitely helped me a lot. It wasn’t so much talking about baseball as it was watching him go about his business. On game day, nobody was as focused as Gil. He took the ball and never wanted to come out of games. Other guys would see that (competitive fire). I tried to be like that. That was my goal.”

On Gil walking away from the money:

“That surprised me a little because he’s entitled to that money. He was legitimately injured. But I’m not that surprised. People don’t realize it, but most guys really don’t play the game because of money. And it drives most guys crazy when they’re injured and can’t earn their money. I know it bothered Gil. That’s why he came back as a reliever last season instead of having surgery. That was his decision, and I think he did a pretty good job for us.”

On the friendly competition between the two:

“In 2008, I was following him (in the rotation) and we would compete against one another. It was that way at the start of 2009, but then he got hurt.”

On Gil working on his golf game in retirement: “Yeah, but he probably still won’t be able to beat me.”

Natalie Portman: I’m Very Superstitious

Natalie Portman: ‘I’m Very Superstitious’ About Pregnancy

Don’t ask Natalie Portman about the color scheme for her baby’s room — the actress says it’s way too soon to start planning the arrival of the child she’s expecting with her fiancé Benjamin Millepied.

“I’m very superstitious,” Portman, 29, said Tuesday at the Los Angeles premiere of her new movie No Strings Attached, in which she stars with Ashton Kutcher.

“I’m very Jewish that way. We don’t do that.”

Considering the actress has been busy promoting three movies in the past few months, she says she’s ready to take some time off after the birth.

“I’ll be out of the public eye after [the baby's born],” Portman said, adding that she will be laying low for a while and will just take any future career opportunity “as it comes.”

Jeffrey Dahmer talks about evolution

"Glenda Cleveland was Jeffrey Dahmer's neighbor, and the serial killer could have been stopped two months earlier if police had only listened to her."
"God knows she tried. 'Are you sure?' she kept asking police on the phone when they insisted that a dazed and naked boy trying to escape from Dahmer was actually an adult involved in a lovers' spat with him. We know now, of course, that he was 14-year-old Konerak Sinthasomphone, and that he was about to become Dahmer's next homicide victim. Cleveland's daughter, Sandra Smith, and niece, Nicole Childress, had spotted the boy fleeing from Dahmer in the alley on May 27, 1991. They were rebuffed by police at the scene, but they told Cleveland who then called police numerous times."

Cleveland died on Christmas Eve at the age of 56.

A 911 call transcript:

Cleveland: “Yeah, uh, what happened? I mean my daughter and my niece witnessed what was going on. Was anything done about the situation? Do you need their names or information or anything from them?”

Officer: “No, not at all.”

Cleveland: “You don’t?”

Officer: “Nope. It was an intoxicated boyfriend of another boyfriend.”

Cleveland: “Well, how old was this child?”

Officer: “It wasn’t a child. It was an adult.”

Cleveland: “Are you sure?”

Officer: “Yup.”

Cleveland: “Are you positive? Because this child doesn’t even speak English. My daughter had, you know, dealt with him before, seeing him on the street. You know, catching earthworms.”

Officer: Ma’am. Ma’am. I can’t make it any more clear. It’s all taken care of. He is with his boyfriend, in his boyfriend’s apartment, where he has his belongings also.”

Cleveland: “But what if he’s a child? Are you positive he is an adult?”

Officer: “Ma’am, like I explained to you, it’s all taken care of. It’s as positive as I can be. I can’t do anything about somebody’s sexual preference in life.”

Cleveland: “Well, no, I am not saying anything about that, but it appeared to have been a child. This is my concern.”

Officer: “No. No. He’s not.”

Cleveland: “He’s not a child?

Officer: “No, he’s not. OK? And it’s a boyfriend-boyfriend thing. And he’s got belongings at the house where he came from. He has very nice pictures of himself and his boyfriend and so forth.”

Cleveland: “OK, I am just, you know. It appeared to have been a child. That was my concern.”

Officer: “I understand. No, he is not. Nope.”

Cleveland: “Oh, OK. Thank you. Bye.”

Doctors optimistic about Giffords

Doctors in Tucson just finished a news conference on the condition of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. The Arizona Democrat was shot in the head at point blank range on Saturday, during a rampage outside of a supermarked that killed six people.

Dr. Michael Lemole of University Medical Center in Tucson said Giffords remains in critical condition in the hospital's intensive care unit. She is in a medically induced coma and unable to speak, but responds to simple commands.

Surgeons removed part of Giffords' skull to treat a wound, created when a bullet traversed the left hemisphere of her brain -- from the back of her head to the front.

"Brain swelling is the biggest threat right now," he said. Lemole and Dr. Peter Rhee declined to put a time-table to Giffords' recovery. Lemole said similar brain injuries could involve "months to years" for recovery and rehab.

Rhee, director of the hospital's trauma unit, says Giffords has been able to follow simple commands. "I don't know what her deficits will be in the future. Overall this is about as good as you are going to get.''

Here is some of the news conference:

Update at 12: 18 p.m. ET: Dr. Peter Rhee, head of the trauma unit at University Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz., said Giffords is alive because paramedics got her to the hospital quickly. The trauma surgeon "did everything right," he said. The other part of it is luck and where the bullet hit.

Rhee said "No one that should have died ... died. Everyone else is being transferred out of ICU."

Update at 12:30 p.m. ET: Rhee said Giffords "did not speak" when she arrived at the hospital. "She did not say any words." Rhee, who served in Iraq, said his situation in Tucson "doesn't compare. This is a luxury for me," referring to the hospital in Arizona and its resources.

Updated at noon ET:

A news conference is beginning at University Medical Center in Arizona on the condition of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz.

Dr. Peter Rhee, director of trauma at the center, said he never thought he'd experience this kind of tragedy in his backyard. Asked about the brain injury suffered by Giffords and its aftermath, Rhee said: "This is about as good as it is going to get," Rhee said. "This so far has been a good situation."

Only one patient remains in critical condition and that is Giffords, who is in a medically induced coma.

Dr. Michael Lemole, chief of neurosurgery, says doctors were able to control Giffords' bleeding, which was not excessive.

Lemole said there were concern if the bullet crossed the geometric center of her brain. That was "not the case in this instance. Giffords is able to communicate and follow simple commands."

"Brain swelling at any time can take a turn for worse," Lemole said. "She looks good now... Brain swelling is the biggest threat."

Giffords, 40, was shot in the head at point blank range on Saturday in an Arizona rampage that left six people dead.

Rhee said Giffords can't open her eyes. Lemole said she is responding to simple commands, such as squeezing fingers.

Lemole said surgery took about two hours. The bullet went through the left side of her brain but did not make "critical trajectories" that would make recovery difficult. "We don't speculate" on length of recovery, he said.

As part of the surgery, Rhee said, Lemole had to remove Giffords' skull.

Lemole said it is not uncommon for a patient in this kinds of cases to be in intensive care for at least a week.

Giffords and 10 other victims of the shooting are being treated at University Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz.
