Global glaucoma therapeutics market was worth $3.9 billion

The global glaucoma market is predicted to witness major revenue depletion over the next few years due to a string of patent expiries, notes a new report from GobalData. At present, Pfizer’s Xalatan (latanoprost) is the most prescribed drug for the treatment of glaucoma.

The authors' analysis suggests that the global glaucoma therapeutics market was worth $3.9 billion in 2009. However, this is forecast to decline with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.7%, which is mostly due to the patent expirations of branded drugs. The market will be flooded with generic version of these branded drugs, which could impact the glaucoma therapeutics market.

The glaucoma market will be subjected to generic erosion, which could impact overall market revenues despite the increase in disease prevalence and treatment seeking rates. The interesting fact to note is that products which are expected to enter the market are either “me-toos” or product extensions, which will not bring about any significant improvements in terms of safety and efficacy. Therefore, the only factor which could drive the market would be the cost of the product.

As a result, generics are predicted to govern the market for glaucoma drugs over the next few years. The CAGR for 2001 to 2009 was 1.7% and is expected to nose dive to a negative CAGR of -4.7% between 2009 and 2017 because of the possible impact of generics entering the market.

Mobile apps market $25 billion by 2015

Mobile apps market to be worth $25 billion by 2015

A research firm is estimating that the mobile apps market will grow to $25 billion by 2015, with an annual growth rate of nearly 30 percent.

If you hate the expanded role of apps in smartphones, the next five years are gonna be brutal. A new study by MarketsandMarkets predicts that the global apps market will swell to about $25 billion in annual revenue by 2015, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 29.6 percent from now until 2014. The growth will mostly come from the high adoption rate of smartphones, proliferation of high-speed 4G services, and falling data costs in the next five years. Apps made $6.8 billion in 2010.
The power of the App Store

The report shows the intense impact that the iPhone App Store had on the cell phone apps market. In 2007, there were 450 million global app downloads. The App Store was launched in July of 2008. There were about 1.1 billion downloads that year, totaling $1.49 billion. In 2009, downloads skyrocketed to 6.44 billion and revenue grew to $4.51 billion. The App Store reached 2 billion downloads alone within its first year of operation and changed the market for apps. While most apps were downloaded through cellphone carrier portals in years prior, Apple’s success has changed the entire market. Now handset manufacturers, operating system makers, and a growing number of third parties run most app stores.

However, Apple’s success has also come at a cost. While the revenue from apps is expected to increase at 29.6 percent, the number of actual downloads will grow much faster, compounding at 64.2 percent until 2015. This is mostly due to reductions in average selling price of apps which will drop from $0.57 in 2010 to $0.18 in 2015 (many apps are free and skew these numbers).

MarketsandMarkets expects the Apple App Store to retain a 20.5 percent share of the market through 2015, though that’s an awfully long ways out to predict market share. Could anyone have predicted the meteoric rise Android went through in just a year?

RIP David Nelson Margaret Whiting Goodbye Jefferson Market

Two Hollywood deaths to report from yesterday.

David Nelson, Ricky Nelson‘s older brother and the eldest child of Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, died at age 74. Wow–just to think that Ricky Nelson would have turned 71 this spring is frightening.

David was the actor of the two Nelson brothers, not the rock star. He appeared in the family TV show–which may have been the first reality show with celebrities. But he also acted in several prime time shows of the era including “Peyton Place.” It’s sad to think all the original Nelsons are gone now. Rest in peace.

Margaret Whiting--I just mentioned her a couple of weeks ago. Her father, a famous composer, co-wrote “On the Good Ship Lollipop.” Margaret became a pop singer superstar of the 1950s. She was the Celine Dion, let’s say, of her generation. Margaret Whiting worked in to the 1980s, and was married for a long time to porn star Jack Wrangler. (Yes,. it was icky.) She was 86, and beloved by her fans.

JEFFERSON MARKET, GOODBYE AGAIN

The Jefferson Market came to this part of Greenwich Village in 1929. Eighteen months ago, when it was about to close, I asked John Catsimatidis, who owns Gristede’s and Red Apple supermarkets, if he’d come and take a look at it. He did, and bought the lease. John did a valiant job, and I thank him. But time has marched on, and the new store never was able to compete with Citarella and Whole Foods. It’s going to close on Friday, I think, for good.

Until just three years ago, Jefferson Market was a bustling place. Their blue pedal bike carts were staples of our neighborhood, and a throw back to a simpler New York. In the old days–until the mid 80s–the market had no cash registers. They used little manual adding machines to ring up the charges. There were no credit cards, either. John Montuori owned the market for years until his untimely death in 1985 at age 56. His son, Louis, moved the market from the west side of Sixth Avenue to the east, at 10th St., in 1995. The space was too big, and things went downhill from there.

It’s a shame. The fear, of course, is that the large space will become something awful and commercial in a neighborhood that barely has restaurants that deliver food. Even worse: that like so many spaces here, it will remain open and lacking any tenant.

So goodbye, Jefferson Market: the famous butcher, the cooked chickens, exotic fruits always in season, to all the white haired guys who are long gone now. Another part of New York history sinks into memory.
