Well, it might have worked. There are moments, though not exactly whole scenes, in the new Seth Rogen film The Green Hornet when we get a glimpse of how this long-gestating movie might have been a kick, a refreshing change from the ponderously self-important superhero movies of the past decade.
The high point might be the opening scene, before the stars arrive on screen. Christoph Waltz, the suave villain of Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, plays Los Angeles’s meanest drug dealer and villain, facing a middle-aged crisis as well as a swaggering young upstart (a sneak cameo by a Spider-Man alumnus and one of Seth Rogen’s former co-stars). The silly but deftly turned dialogue is enough to raise hopes that a genre overdue for a smart spoofing is about to get its due.
The Green Hornet is directed by Michel Gondry, known for his playful philosophical sensibility (The Science of Sleep, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). Though he was first attached to the film back in the nineties, since then it has been associated with a string of different directors, stars and concepts. To its credit, the studio didn’t go the conventional route.
Gondry’s improbable creative partner here is writer-actor Seth Rogen (Superbad, Pineapple Express), the breakout star of the Judd Apatow school of raunchy-but-amiable bromances, who serves here not only as the star, but co-writer and executive producer with his creative partner, Evan Goldberg.
Instead of magical creative synergy, what happens here feels sad. Rather than a meeting of talents, we get a stand-off, an ungainly stop-and-start compromise between action and comedy: Juvenile verbal jousting, bombastic action, more juvenile humour, typically recapping what just happened. Gondry shows little evidence of his usually distinctive visual style, falling into the slick, antic style of mediocre action movies, and the 3-D effects, added in post-production, contribute little beyond an increase in the ticket prices.
The story is based on a 1930s radio show, conceived by Lone Ranger creator George Trendle, which subsequently became a comic book, a couple of movie serials and a one-season television show that introduced Bruce Lee to Western audiences in the 1960s. The role of the Green Hornet, Britt Reid, the heir to a Los Angeles publishing fortune, has been refitted for Rogen’s hard-partying slacker persona.
When his harsh father (Tom Wilkinson) dies suddenly, Britt is, in theory, compelled to grow up and accept adult responsibility, using the paper to fight for justice in a city mired in crime and corruption. Instead, he prefers to hang out with his dad’s coffee-maker and ingenious mechanic, Kato (Taiwanese pop star and actor Jay Chou) in his old man’s tricked-out black Chrysler Imperial. Along the way, they can pose as bad guys in order to infiltrate the world of real bad guys and enjoy a secret fantasy life as masked vigilantes.
There’s the germ of a good idea here, as Rogen and Goldberg’s script chooses not to ignore the childish wish-fulfilment aspect of superhero stories. But instead of exploring arrested development, it celebrates it. The one-note joke here is that there’s a major discrepancy between the would-be superhero, the ungainly Rogen as the Green Hornet, and his far more capable and cooler sidekick. It gets repeated endlessly.
Kato, who knows martial arts and has special vision that slows down the action (the brief effective use of 3-D), is clearly the genius, while Britt is the self-deluded front man. As a co-star, Chou is sleekly handsome, and enough of a pop star to help sell the movie in Asia, but his English is sometimes hard to understand. Rogen, who, while slimmed down, sticks to his familiar role as the wisecracking observer.
We wait, and wait, for this relationship to evolve. Instead, we have too much dull banter about the proper roles of heroes and sidekicks, and mocking the latently homo-erotic relationship between the two (“No tights,” they agree.). By the time The Green Hornet collapses into a mess of hackneyed car chases and flying glass and bullets, it feels less like the promised irreverent take on the superhero genre, and more like the latest iteration of the Rush Hour movies.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Prosecutors say “Green Hornet” and “Terminator 2″ star Eddie Furlong has been arrested in Los Angeles for violating a court order to stay 100 yards away from his estranged wife.
City attorney’s office spokesman Frank Mateljan says the 33-year-old actor was in court Tuesday for a hearing on the three-year restraining order obtained by Rachael Kneeland when the judge ordered his arrest. He was released on $75,000 bond about three hours later.
People magazine was first to report the arrest, which came a day after the premiere of “Green Hornet.” The movie is in theaters Friday.
Kneeland and Furlong, the parents of a 4-year-old son, are involved in divorce proceedings.
Prosecutors say Furlong pleaded no contest in November to violating the court’s order, and a progress hearing Tuesday determined he violated probation terms several weeks later.
As a kid, I loved comic books. I collected all the latest DC and Marvel titles, starting when they were 10 cents apiece, and through the 1960s, that was my collecting passion.
In 1966, ABC premiered "Batman", and along with Superman reruns on local Channel 11, I was in my element watching these shows, as they brought to the screen the comic book superheroes I had been reading about with such a voracious attitude.
In 1967, ABC, basking in the success they had with Batman, tried to duplicate it with "The Green Hornet." It was put out by the same production company, was highly promoted, and I am sure ABC thought that lightning could strike twice with this series.
It failed miserably.
However, even though I didn't know the Hornet and his valet and sidekick, Kato, from comic books, I did know the name. The Hornet was created in the 1930s for radio as the then up to date reappearance of a modern, more sophisticated Lone Ranger (and yes, Kato was the modern Tonto and the Black Beauty was the modern Silver ... well, I think you get it). In fact, Britt Reid, the Hornet's alter ego, was created as a relative of John Reid, the Lone Ranger himself.
Anyway, I loved the show. I loved the theme song (a modern take on "Flight of the Bumblebee" by Al Hirt), and I loved the whole concept.
It was done straighter than the "Batman" show, with few laughs, fewer weird camera angles, and fewer memorable villains (meaning none).
It was so different than "Batman" was, that I think it turned off the "Batman"-loving audience.
Me, having read the comic books, I knew that the Batman on TV and the Batman in the comic books were quite different. The one on TV was melodramatic and comedic, while the one in the comics was basically melodramatic and serious.
So I was prepared for the Hornet, but after 26 episodes, few others were, and the show went into oblivion. Like the "Batman" TV show, it is in a DVD black hole, as a prolonged lawsuit is keeping both shows from appearing on legitimate DVDs.
Back to the show ...
Van Williams, the Hornet on the TV show, had a sidekick, Kato, played by Bruce Lee, who went onto bigger and better things after the show.
As Kato, he really had to hold back on his martial arts skills, showing them off a few times each episode but not showing them off to the fullest extent that he could.
But ABC knew they had something with Lee. They cast him in "Longstreet," a show about a blind lawyer which starred James Franciscus. That series also didn't last long, and Lee had some bit roles in a few movies.
But during this time, his interest in the martial arts continued to heighten, and he had an idea for a TV series melding his love of the martial arts with a message--of peace, love and harmony.
That show was "Kung Fu." ABC was a little nervous about having a show with an Asian lead, and the lead role eventually went to David Carradine, who, ironically, was a martial arts pupil of Lee.
Lee was discouraged, went to Hong Kong to make several low-budget martial arts flicks, and became a worldwide sensation when these movies made millions of dollars.
But his life was cut short due to cocaine abuse, and well, the rest is history.
Lee, and Williams, live on in their roles in "The Green Hornet," and today, SyFy channel is running the 26 episodes throughout the day to commemorate the Friday opening of "The Green Hornet" feature film, with Seth Rogen in the tile role.
I don't know about the new movie, but I can tell you about the TV show.
Give the show a chance. Remember, it is not "Batman," but it is a straight-forward TV adaptation of the character, which started out in radio, to the small screen.
Williams basically deadpans it, as does Lee, but watch for the brief fighting scenes. You will actually see Lee completely holding back on his kicks and punches, but it is fun to watch nonetheless.
Back in 1967, we weren't really aware of the type of martial arts that Lee was displaying in a limited way on this show. It was so new that it was truly fascinating to watch, a few years before the Kung-Fu craze filled every movie house worth its salt with cheapo fight flicks that made millions.
And yes, the show is a lot of fun, even though it rarely cracks a smile.
By the way, not included in the 26 episodes being shown are the two "Batman" episodes where Williams and Lee made guest appearances. Those shows are as light as air, but Williams and Lee continue to deadpan it, in deference to Adam West (Batman) and Burt Ward (Robin), who do their usual comedic assault on the Dynamic Duo.
Anyway, watch the 26 "Green Hornet" episodes; you will not be disappointed.
I know that I wasn't more than 40 years ago when these shows were new, and I wasn't when I watched them as an adult years later.

This weekend, the Green Hornet “flies” on to the silver screen. Seth Rogen will portray the latest incarnation of this beloved hero.
While the character may have a new coat of paint, his roots run fairly deep. They go back to 1936 – and a radio station in Detroit, Michigan.
A New Masked Man
By 1936, Detroit radio station WXYZ had already impacted popular culture. Three years earlier, WXYZ president George Trendle had developed a radio show about a new Western hero. This hero was the Lone Ranger. Now, Trendle wondered if lightning could strike twice.
In his memoir WXYie Wonderland (An Unauthorized 50-Year Diary of WXYZ Detroit), Dick Osgood describes the Green Hornet’s beginnings. Osgood notes that the Lone Ranger appealed to children. According to Osgood, Trendle now wanted a radio program for “young people who are about to vote.” Osgood explains that this new program was to feature a modern-day hero who exposed corrupt office holders. Thus, the Green Hornet was born!
Family Business
The Green Hornet – like the Lone Ranger before him – wore a mask. The two heroes also shared a common surname. The Lone Ranger’s real name was John Reid. The Green Hornet was the alter ego of newspaper publisher Britt Reid. The two masked men were, in fact, related (The Hornet was the Ranger’s great nephew.).
Both also preferred “colorful” modes of transportation. While the Ranger rode a horse named Silver, the Hornet owned a car called “the Black Beauty.” Kato, his valet and sidekick, drove.

In On the Air: The Encyclopedia of Old-Time Radio, John Dunning states that Kato was “a master chemist” who created “gas guns and smoke screens” for the Green Hornet. Dunning also describes Kato as “blessed with keen intelligence” and “an expert in the secrets of Oriental combat.”
In the program’s earliest years, Kato was identified as Japanese. Dick Osgood notes that Kato “changed miraculously overnight from Japanese to Filipino” after the United States entered World War II. According to Dunning, this isn’t completely true, as “Kato was described as a Filipino of Japanese descent at least two years earlier.” Regardless, Osgood states that Raymond Toyo Hayashi, the Japanese actor who provided Kato’s voice, “disappeared.” Osgood speculates that Hayashi may have been placed in a wartime internment camp. Regardless, Osgood recalls that “no one at WXYZ ever saw Raymond again.”
From Then Until Now
The Green Hornet radio program ended in 1952. In 1966, a Green Hornet television series debuted. Van Williams performed the title role, and Bruce Lee played Kato (Lee, of course, later became a star of martial arts films, including Enter the Dragon). The show ran for a single season but many viewers recall it fondly.
Of course, even cancellation can not stop the Green Hornet and Kato. As the two prepare to ride on the big screen, Michigan residents can feel a special tinge of pride. It all began, after all, with one radio station in Detroit!

BULLSEYE Jan. 7: Witch, Dilemma, Sanctum, Hornet, More
While the late-year box office featured a lot of activity, the first weekend of 2011 should prove much sleepier in terms of new blood at theaters. The Flixster Bullseye for the Jan. 7 weekend is below. Relativity's Season of the Witch is the only wide opener, competing with a slew of strong holdovers (such as True Grit and The Fighter) and an expansion of Screen Gems' Country Strong. Most eyes are on how grosses will help or hurt awards momentum, but there is no such concern attached to the Nic Cage actioner. Its bubble is the biggest of the bunch, but it's skewing well into the older male quadrant of the grid with only medium-level interest from the curious. It could open in the $15-17 million range, though Cage is never to be counted out no matter how questionable the material looks (Summit's Knowing from 2009 opened to $25 million). Seth Rogen turned “The Green Hornet” into more of an action comedy and buddy film than what audiences remember from the 1960s televison series.
Seth Rogen wants to make one thing perfectly clear. He grew up a Batman fan.
“As a kid, I’d watch ‘Batman.’ It was my thing,” he says. “But afterward, ‘The Green Hornet’ was on in reruns. I never left my couch. Here was this guy fighting crime with his buddy.
“I’m sorry, Batman, but Robin was more of an employee. He was an underling. Kato really ruled.”
Cut to a few years ago.
“My partner Evan [Goldberg] and I always wanted to write a movie about a hero and a sidekick and the relationship between them,” Rogen says. “We realized that ‘The Green Hornet’ was the perfect movie to do that with because of how famous Kato is in relation to Green Hornet.”
It was fitting to bring a comic book to the big screen because Rogen is a self-confessed comic book geek.
“Me and Evan go to the comic book store almost every single week,” he confesses. “We have thousands of comic books. We read very few books without pictures of men in tights, which is embarrassing to say but true.”
Now, Rogen is the one in tights. He plays debonair newspaper publisher Britt Reid, who also fights crime as a masked superhero called the Green Hornet. He works with martial arts expert Kato (Jay Chou) and has a love interest in secretary Lenore Case (Cameron Diaz). The film also stars Christoph Waltz, Tom Wilkinson and Edward James Olmos.
Rogen says bringing back the Green Hornet was a challenge.
“We were very aware that the Green Hornet is an old character, but a lot of things have derived from him,” he says. “The Green Hornet was the first superhero character to have a newspaper involved and have a car that shoots weapons and stuff like that. Since then, other comics like ‘Superman’ and ‘Spider-Man’ and ‘Batman’ have taken those ideas and made them much more popular.”
Now, it was the Hornet’s turn. Rogen believed it was key to turn “The Green Hornet” into an action comedy.
“We have the action play seriously and dangerously,” he says. “But it was very clear that there was no way to do this movie totally seriously. We needed to bring some lightness to it because the Green Hornet isn’t that dark a character. He has no deep secret. His parents weren’t murdered. He’s not avenging.”
Rogen also wanted to give his comedy audiences what they’ve come to expect from him.
“I think I was able to inject a lot of my own personality into it. And as the character evolves, he becomes more of what you would consider the traditional heroic type,” he says. “We really wanted to show the journey of a guy from being very unheroic to ultimately being a hero.”
Rogen was instrumental in finding the perfect Kato. Enter actor Jay Chou. The native of Taiwan is best known for the 2010 movie “True Legend.”
“Jay was amazing. We first read with him over Skype, which was very awkward due to the time delay. But it was clear that he was very cool,” Rogen says. “And it was very clear that if he and I were a crime-fighting team that he would not be the sidekick. He would be the leader.”
Rogen says that Chou didn’t disappoint on the set.
“When we got together, he was very cool and charismatic and physically very coordinated and capable. And the language barrier wasn’t that bad. We acknowledge in the movie that he doesn’t speak perfect English. We really tried to make it much like us interacting in real life.”
Rogen also had to deal with a tough Cameron Diaz.
“I think Cameron can kick the s--- out of me, personally,” he jokes. “She’s extremely fit. She has long legs. She has incredible leg reach. She surfs. She has great stamina. So, yeah, she can whip my ass good.”
Rogen had less to whip.
“I dieted a little and exercised,” he says. “That’s a boring answer. Afterward, I played a chef in a movie, so I went from dieting to giving myself a little free rein. I even added back in a few sides of bacon to any meal of the day. You know you can eat bacon during any meal of the day — not just breakfast.”
Rogen is the first one to admit that a movie stuntman is an actor’s best friend.
“I did as little as humanly possible,” he says of the stunts. “No, the truth is I did some. I feel like I move in a very specific and very goofy way, so as much as possible I tried to do the stunts.
“My only fear was I’d get hurt and that would ruin the movie,” he says. “But please write down that Seth Rogen does kick ass.”
He also loved his action scenes in the Green Hornet’s car.
“The Black Beauty is pretty rad,” Rogen says. “I’m very glad we wound up with this version of it. In real life, I drive a Lexus hybrid, which is quite nerdy. It’s a very conservative car, a sensible vehicle.”
He adds, “It took a lot to arrive back at the original car. A lot of car companies made bids to design the new, future-y version of it. And we kind of had to convince the studio to turn down tens of millions of dollars of marketing money to use a 1965 Chrysler Imperial. And I’m really glad we did, because I think it’s a really kick-ass car.”
He’s ready for a new comic book, superhero-loving audience to embrace him now — for life.
“The nerdy things that I love to talk about are now cool,” Rogen says. “My hobbies are part of pop culture. I don’t feel like a geek anymore.”
