Bob Newhart NCIS Welcomes: On the Set

David Mccallum On the Set: NCIS Welcomes Bob Newhart

Shooting a scene in the autopsy lab on the NCIS set, Bob Newhart looks a bit absentminded, and an interloper might not know whether to chuckle. The TV legend is playing Dr. Walter Magnus, who preceded Ducky (David McCallum) as the unit's medical examiner. Looking over a corpse with Gibbs (Mark Harmon), Ducky suggests their old colleague add his forensic two cents. "Walter, why don't you jump into some scrubs? ...Walter?"

Newhart's hesitancy in responding isn't far off from the trademark stammer he made into a science on two of TV's most beloved sitcoms, The Bob Newhart Show (1972-78) and Newhart (1982-90). Since NCIS is a drama in touch with its lighter side, you might guess the visiting icon was cast in "Recruited" to capitalize on his levity. Not so. The former doc is starting to fade mentally and, in a poignant twist, revisits his old haunts to see if they stir some memories.

"I know this guy," says Newhart, taking a break between scenes. "Well, I'm getting closer to knowing this guy." This dramatic gig isn't completely out of character for Newhart, who was Emmy-nominated for a three-week run on ER in 2003. "That was [exec producer] John Wells' idea," he says. "There was nothing in my previous history to suggest I could carry that off, but he felt I could. That was a guy with macular degeneration who worked with his hands and wound up killing himself. That's something I could never consider, having four kids and nine grandkids and loving life, but I could understand how this guy got there. In this script, it's a similar thing, with a guy who had to give up what he loves."

There's no danger of the 81-year-old Newhart giving up his life's work. "People say, 'Why don't you retire?' But as long as you're physically able, how can you [be] tired of making people laugh?" he asks. "The travel's a pain in the ass and I would never go back into a weekly grind — that's for young people. But I still love comedy."

On NCIS, "they encouraged me to make it as light as I wanted to," he says, although circumstances didn't allow for much of that. "Mark said to the director, 'We've got Bob, so let's put a phone call in,'" alluding to one of his comedic trademarks. "I said, 'Let me fool with it.' I was trying to walk a line between being funny and maintaining the integrity of the show — not to have the show stop for a Bob Newhart moment."

A set visitor wonders if his character might recur, à la recent NCIS guest Robert Wagner. "They're gonna have to hurry," points out Newhart, whose character's prognosis is grim. Exec producer Gary Glasberg passes by and says all hope is not lost. "We'll do some crossover with House and cure you," he jokes. "You were on the wrong medication. Too much Viagra or something."

Newhart says his wife of 48 years, Ginnie, is the biggest NCIS fanatic in the family, having gotten hooked on constant USA Network repeats while recovering from a liver transplant in 2009. "We go out for dinner every Tuesday with Tim Conway and Mike Connors and their wives, but we always make it home by eight — that's one of the conditions." He would've taken the gig without spousal nudging, though: "If you can pick and choose, why not go with the No. 1 drama on TV?"

NCIS airs Tuesday at 8/7c on CBS.

RIP David Nelson Margaret Whiting Goodbye Jefferson Market

Two Hollywood deaths to report from yesterday.

David Nelson, Ricky Nelson‘s older brother and the eldest child of Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, died at age 74. Wow–just to think that Ricky Nelson would have turned 71 this spring is frightening.

David was the actor of the two Nelson brothers, not the rock star. He appeared in the family TV show–which may have been the first reality show with celebrities. But he also acted in several prime time shows of the era including “Peyton Place.” It’s sad to think all the original Nelsons are gone now. Rest in peace.

Margaret Whiting--I just mentioned her a couple of weeks ago. Her father, a famous composer, co-wrote “On the Good Ship Lollipop.” Margaret became a pop singer superstar of the 1950s. She was the Celine Dion, let’s say, of her generation. Margaret Whiting worked in to the 1980s, and was married for a long time to porn star Jack Wrangler. (Yes,. it was icky.) She was 86, and beloved by her fans.

JEFFERSON MARKET, GOODBYE AGAIN

The Jefferson Market came to this part of Greenwich Village in 1929. Eighteen months ago, when it was about to close, I asked John Catsimatidis, who owns Gristede’s and Red Apple supermarkets, if he’d come and take a look at it. He did, and bought the lease. John did a valiant job, and I thank him. But time has marched on, and the new store never was able to compete with Citarella and Whole Foods. It’s going to close on Friday, I think, for good.

Until just three years ago, Jefferson Market was a bustling place. Their blue pedal bike carts were staples of our neighborhood, and a throw back to a simpler New York. In the old days–until the mid 80s–the market had no cash registers. They used little manual adding machines to ring up the charges. There were no credit cards, either. John Montuori owned the market for years until his untimely death in 1985 at age 56. His son, Louis, moved the market from the west side of Sixth Avenue to the east, at 10th St., in 1995. The space was too big, and things went downhill from there.

It’s a shame. The fear, of course, is that the large space will become something awful and commercial in a neighborhood that barely has restaurants that deliver food. Even worse: that like so many spaces here, it will remain open and lacking any tenant.

So goodbye, Jefferson Market: the famous butcher, the cooked chickens, exotic fruits always in season, to all the white haired guys who are long gone now. Another part of New York history sinks into memory.

David Akers Misses Two Costly Field Goals

David Akers Misses Two Costly Field Goals, Eagles Lose by Five

The Philadelphia Eagles lost at home to the Green Bay Packers on Wild Card Weekend Sunday 21-16. The Packers dominated the game much more than the margin would indicate. They out-rushed Philly, were penalized less, and found the end zone more frequently. Also, James Jones dropped a sure touchdown right before halftime that could have put the Packers up 21-3. But while we mention missed opportunities for Green Bay, the same must be said for the Eagles.
Kicker David Akers, who was named to his fifth Pro Bowl this season, went 1-for-3 on his field goal attempts, costing the Eagles six points. They lost by five. Akers missed from 41 yards out in the first quarter, keeping the Eagles from jumping out to a lead. He did connect on a 29-yard field goal in the second quarter but he missed a critical 34-yard field goal attempt in the fourth quarter. In a playoff game as close as this one, and against a team that seemed to be better, Philadelphia couldn’t afford to miss any opportunities. Akers, who was 30-35 on field goals in his career entering the game, cost them greatly when he hooked those two attempts.
Philadelphia did not play its best game, and Michael Vick was shut down by Green Bay, but they still had enough chances to pull out the win. Packers fans know where they should direct their thank you notes.

David Akers

David Akers missed a 41yard attempt wide right though and the Eagles came away with nothing. A moon shot from Masthay and a hold on the Eagles The Eagles will start at their 34 with 145 left. Akers previously missed a 41yarder that would have. Akers misses from 41 and 34 yards would have.

A critical secondand7 drop by DeSean Jackson killed the drive though as Vicks pass to Jason Avant on thirdand7 only picked up 2 yards. This time David Akers was right from 29 yards but the Eagles trailed 143 at halftime.

Clean hard hit to the midsection nowhere near his head.

Kicker David Akers who was named to his fifth Pro Bowl this season went 1for3 on his field goal attempts costing the Eagles six points.

Two missed David Akers proved to be the difference as the Green Bay Packers topped the Philadelphia Eagles 2116 Sunday in front of a saddened and cold crowd at Lincoln Financial Field. Akers struggled kicking toward the north end zone in pregame warmups likely because of the swirling winds. Theyre 38 yards from the goahead touchdown.

Vick and running back McCoy mounted a drive which resulted in a missed David Akers field goal from 38 yards out. David Akers is searching witness protection program on the players union Web site. Vicks back out there.

Not wanting to go into the halftime without points on the board Michael Vick guided the Philadelphia Eagles on a 8play 63yard drive that capped by a 29yard David Akers field goal.

Philadelphia trailed 2110 going into the fourth quarter and had several opportunities inside Green Bay territory being forced to punt and having David Akers miss a small field goal. The Eagles call time with 106 left. Still the Birds battled on a 13play 78 yard drive. On a 4th and 1 Vick keeps it.

Akers’ Two Misses Prove Costly As Eagles Fall To Packers 21-16

Two missed David Akers proved to be the difference as the Green Bay Packers topped the Philadelphia Eagles 21-16 Sunday in front of a saddened and chilly crowd at Lincoln Financial Field.

Akers’ misses from 41 and 34 yards would have given the Eagles six additional points and a one-point victory–in theory anyway.

The loss was a painful one in a number of ways for Andy Reid’s squad.

DeSean Jackson, Michael Vick and Brent Celek each sustained injuries of varying degrees. Given the amount of pain Jackson appeared to be in, it’s not a stretch to say he would not have returned had it been the regular season.

Although seemingly dominated all afternoon, a late drive nearly lifted the Eagles to a come from behind win, but Tramon Williams intercepted Vick in the end zone with 32 seconds remaining. Philadelphia was out of time outs.

Vick was 20-of-36 for 292 yards, one touchdown and the previously mentioned interception.

With Jackson hurting, Jason Avant became the Eagles’ leading receiver with seven grabs for 93 yards and a score.

The Packers offense was led by James Starks who set a team record for rushing yards by a rookie in a playoff game with 123.

Aaron Rodgers threw for three touchdowns and 180 yards without being intercepted.

The Packers next travel to face the Atlanta Falcons next Saturday night while the Eagles will clear out their lockers tomorrow before turning their attention to re-signing their free-agent quarterback.

The Skate For The Heart event was taped Sunday night in Youngstown OH for broadcast in January on NBC. Both David Archuleta and Ruben Studdard performed for the skaters performances.

David sang “My Kind Of Perfect” for Joannie Rochette and “Something ‘Bout Love” for pair skaters.

I’m not sure what Ruben sang, but he had two songs as well. David, Ruben and the band Straight No Chaser were part of a group number at the end.

After the jump, check out David singing “My Kind of Perfect”, “Something Bout Love” and David and Ruben joining a group finale for “Soul Man”.
