David Akers Misses Two Costly Field Goals, Eagles Lose by Five

Kicker David Akers, who was named to his fifth Pro Bowl this season, went 1-for-3 on his field goal attempts, costing the Eagles six points. They lost by five. Akers missed from 41 yards out in the first quarter, keeping the Eagles from jumping out to a lead. He did connect on a 29-yard field goal in the second quarter but he missed a critical 34-yard field goal attempt in the fourth quarter. In a playoff game as close as this one, and against a team that seemed to be better, Philadelphia couldn’t afford to miss any opportunities. Akers, who was 30-35 on field goals in his career entering the game, cost them greatly when he hooked those two attempts.
Philadelphia did not play its best game, and Michael Vick was shut down by Green Bay, but they still had enough chances to pull out the win. Packers fans know where they should direct their thank you notes.

Akers’ Two Misses Prove Costly As Eagles Fall To Packers 21-16
Two missed David Akers proved to be the difference as the Green Bay Packers topped the Philadelphia Eagles 21-16 Sunday in front of a saddened and chilly crowd at Lincoln Financial Field.
Akers’ misses from 41 and 34 yards would have given the Eagles six additional points and a one-point victory–in theory anyway.
The loss was a painful one in a number of ways for Andy Reid’s squad.

Although seemingly dominated all afternoon, a late drive nearly lifted the Eagles to a come from behind win, but Tramon Williams intercepted Vick in the end zone with 32 seconds remaining. Philadelphia was out of time outs.
Vick was 20-of-36 for 292 yards, one touchdown and the previously mentioned interception.
With Jackson hurting, Jason Avant became the Eagles’ leading receiver with seven grabs for 93 yards and a score.
The Packers offense was led by James Starks who set a team record for rushing yards by a rookie in a playoff game with 123.
Aaron Rodgers threw for three touchdowns and 180 yards without being intercepted.
The Packers next travel to face the Atlanta Falcons next Saturday night while the Eagles will clear out their lockers tomorrow before turning their attention to re-signing their free-agent quarterback.
