Vikings hire Singletary Tom Cable to Seahawks

COACHING MOVES: Vikings hire Singletary Tom Cable to Seahawks

No longer wanted by the Bay Area teams they led this season, Mike Singletary and Tom Cable found work Tuesday with the Vikings and Seahawks, respectively.

Ex-49ers coach Singletary is reuniting with his Super Bowl champion Bears teammate Leslie Frazier in Minnesota. Singletary's agent, Bob LaMonte, confirmed that Singletary will be the linebackers coach and assistant head coach under Frazier, who was named head coach two weeks ago after serving in that capacity on an interim basis following Brad Childress' Nov. 22 firing.

Singletary, a linebacker, and Frazier, a cornerback, were part of the dominant defense that led the Bears to a Super Bowl title after the 1985 season.

Frazier is expected to promote linebackers coach Fred Pagac to replace him as defensive coordinator.

Cable heads home: Cable, let go by the Raiders Jan. 4, returns to his native Pacific Northwest to be assistant head coach under Pete Carroll and to work with Seattle's offensive line.

Cable played high school football in Snohomish, north of Seattle, and his college coaching resume includes a four-year stint as head man at Idaho.

Other Seahawks moves Tuesday included the firing of offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates.

Now Cable's focus will be on improving an offensive line that was a major deficiency Bates had to deal with all season. Seattle ranked 28th in the league in yards per game and 23rd in scoring.

Fuji Moves Astaxanthin from Hawaii to Sweden

TOYAMA, Japan— Fuji Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. has decided to close its Hawaii-based astaxanthin facility and consolidate all its production in its Swedish facility, which it said has more easily expandable technology and efficiencies. The plants both commercially cultivate Haematococcus pluvialis for astaxanthin production but each employed a different technology. Fuji said the Swedish facility is modular and can be expanded rapidly to accommodate the continued growth of the natural astaxanthin market. The company said despite the relocation of H. pluvialis cultivation, they are considering the Hawaii facility for continued algal development.

According to Fuji, the Swedish facility, which started operations in 1994 as AstaCarotene, was the first facility in the world to produce commercial natural astaxanthin from the H. pluvialis microalgae. The facility is ISO 9001, good manufacturing practice (GMP)-compliant and is a true monoculture system because it is a fully enclosed system within a clean room environment. The facility had started an expansion project before this consolidation plan was hatched, and there are still plans for further expansion of the operations.

"Fuji's commitment to the production and sale of natural astaxanthin is long term and our goal is to achieve excellence,” said Mitsunori Nishida, president and CEO of Fuji Chemical. “We have sponsored 49 published astaxanthin research studies to date which demonstrates this commitment in establishing the astaxanthin market."

Joan Rivers Moves in With Daughte r Melissa

Joan Rivers Moves in With Daughter Melissa for New Reality Series

What are the stars wearing? Joan Rivers doesn't care anymore. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the comedy legend -- who's practically an awards-season institution on red carpets covering events in recent years for the E! and TV Guide channels -- says she and daughter Melissa Rivers want to move on from dishing about designer duds.
As Melissa explained at the Television Critics Association press tour on Friday, "We've done that. It's not fun anymore."

So the Rivers ladies have decided to launch a reality show about Joan moving in with Melissa. The series premiere of 'Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best?' will air Jan. 25 on WEtv.

But with so much experience chatting up celebs for the cameras (and taking them down for their fashion foibles later), why would the duo turn their well-dressed backs on the kinds of gigs they're famous for?

"When we were doing it, you could tell Julia Roberts, 'I hate your dress,'" said Joan, who added that things have changed. She said publicists "ice you" now, if they feel style-related insults cross a line.

"It took all the fun out of it," added Melissa.

And after Lisa Rinna took over a TV Guide broadcast covering a crowded red carpet in 2007, morale slipped further. Joan recalled, "When I found myself literally pulling Nicole Kidman's arm away from --who's the one with the big lips? -- I thought, 'What am I doing? Take your stupid lips and take these movie stars.'"

As they start a new chapter as reality TV stars, the mom and daughter are hoping not to be compared to MTV-style reality television. "That's reality that I don't like," Joan said. "So I think 'Jersey Shore' -- Yuck!" But of course, she'd be welcome a PR opportunity if the right 'Jersey Shore' star came knocking during an episode of her new series.

"We hope Snooki will come visit us," cracked Joan. "Are you kidding? We're whores!"

Human Target Cancelled

Fox's 'Human Target' Moves To Wednesdays

In the fallout of the Lone Star cancellation, Fox's drama Human Target will move from Fridays to Wednesdays, taking over the slot originally given to Lie To Me. Lie to Me was to premiere on Nov. 10 and run in the Wednesday 8 PM slot, leading into an one-hour Hell's Kitchen. But as the crime procedural was summoned yesterday to take over the Monday 9 PM period vacated by the cancelled Lone Star staring next week, Human Target will now take its place on Wednesdays. It will premiere Nov. 17. A two-hour Hell's Kitchen will air on Nov. 10. Instead of launching Human Target's second season this past Friday as first planned, Fox held back, airing a Human Target rerun instead, followed by the season debut of The Good Guys. The network will now run House repeats in the Friday 8 PM hour.

Verizon’s Announcement News

Will Verizon’s Announcement Have the “I” Word?

Everyone fully expects that Verizon Wireless will finally make the announcement that everyone has been waiting anxiously for – that the company will finally debut a CDMA version of the Apple iPhone.

Verizon and Apple can say whatever they like tomorrow as long as it has the letter “I” in it and it involves the release of a new iPhone for the largest wireless carrier. Even if they do finally release their CDMA iPhone, what does Verizon need to do in order to have success with this new product?

Verizon’s iPhone will need to have a CDMA cellular radio in it so that users can make both voice calls and data calls. CDMA, which they use for the Verizon network, is a different system than the AT&T iPhone uses, which is GSM-based. It’s expected that the Verizon iPhone will work with their 3G services, which would include EVDO Rev. A, the same type of 3G that’s in the Motorola Droid X, HTC Incredible, and other smart phones in Verizon’s inventory.

It would, however, probably be a better choice, if the new Verizon iPhone did better than just turn out to be a CDMA version of the iPhone 4. They might get more AT&T customers to defect to their network if they instead made a “world edition” type handset.

Verizon already has several smart phones in their inventory that can do this, including the Blackberry Storm/Storm2, which can work with its 3G network in the U.S., and roam the 3G networks of European and Asian carriers.

A CDMA only iPhone couldn’t do this, and therefore, Verizon could lose the chance to get some of the business customers who frequently travel overseas.

Another smart move Verizon and Apple could make would be to make their new iPhone work with Long Term Evolution 4G, Verizon’s new LTE network. Verizon just announced that in the coming months they will offer 10 new units that will be capable of doing this, but if they put out a new iPhone now that was capable of doing this, it would give the company a major head start.

Potential customers are also concerned as to whether or not a new Verizon Wireless iPhone will be bogged down with unneeded applications or if it will have the Verizon branded services such as V CAST Music, Video, Rhapsody, and other similar applications preinstalled.

Other questions include speculation on whether or not the Verizon iPhone will be the same or a different size as current versions. Since it doesn’t require a SIM card, Apple engineers could take advantage of that empty space.

Another question is whether some of the issues that the iPhone 4 has will be corrected in a Verizon model? How about the antenna issues? Will it have a stronger front and rear section that won’t be so likely to break if it falls? Can customers use FaceTime on 3G? How much will a Verizon iPhone cost?

The list of questions goes on and on, but no one is getting any answers until tomorrow. Tick Tock, the clock is counting down.

Apple Moves Higher Into Verizon Announcement (NASDAQ:AAPL) (NYSE:VZ) (NYSE:T)

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) is floating higher today in anticipation of tomorrows announcement by Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ). Verizon is expected to announce the availability of the iPHONE. Up until now, AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) has had exclusive rights to the iPHONE. This has been long anticipated and seems to be coaxing buyers into Apple today. Apple is trading at $340.81, +4.69 (+1.39%). Apple has a history of running up into announcements only to see some sellers come in after on profit taking. This may be happening today. It will be very interesting to see if the iPHONE has any bells and whistles or if it is the standard phone. Many analysts are talking about this pushing Apples share price far higher as it fuels earnings. While this may be somewhat true, the hype is usually always more than reality.
