Aniston and Kutcher vie for Hollywood's worst awards

(Reuters) - If films starring Jennifer Aniston, Ashton Kutcher and the lovelorn cast of "Twilight" left you dumbfounded, you're officially in good company.

All are prominent contenders for the Razzie Awards, an annual competition honoring Hollywood's worst movies, actors and filmmakers, its organizer said on Monday.

Now in their 31st year, the Razzies are run by California movie buff John Wilson's Golden Raspberry Foundation as an antidote to the self-congratulatory seriousness that engulfs Hollywood during Oscar season.

The winners, determined by 600-plus voters, will be announced during a Hollywood ceremony on February 26, the day before the Oscars are handed out. Not surprisingly, most honorees do not attend. Notable exceptions included Sandra Bullock last year for "All About Steve," and Halle Berry in 2005 for "Catwoman." Coincidentally, they went on to win Oscars the next day, albeit for different films.

"The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," the latest installment in the hit franchise about vampires and werewolves, led this year's Razzie field alongside "The Last Airbender," director M. Night Shyamalan's 3D martial-arts fantasy. They each received nine nominations.

"Sex and the City 2," depicting the latest sexual adventures of four aging women, followed with seven nominations.

All will vie for worst picture along with Aniston's romantic comedy "The Bounty Hunter," and the critically reviled parody "Vampires Suck," which both received four nominations.

Aniston will compete for worst actress on the strength of her roles in both "Bounty Hunter" and "The Switch," another unloved romantic comedy. The "Sex and the City" foursome -- Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon -- received a collective nomination.

The field was rounded out by Miley Cyrus ("The Last Song"), Megan Fox ("Jonah Hex") and Kristen Stewart ("Twilight"). For Cyrus it will be a family affair since her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, was nominated for his supporting role in "The Spy Next Door."

Kutcher was cited for worst actor, also for two movies -- "Killers" and "Valentine's Day." Aniston's "Bounty Hunter" co-star Gerard Butler, also made the cut, as did "Twilight" stars Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson.

Natalie Portman says she'd take parenting advice from "No Strings Attached" costar Ashton Kutcher.

The newly knocked-up actress told MTV News that Kutcher would come to their movie set with sweet stories about advice he gave his stepdaughters, which showed her that he was a committed parent to Demi Moore's kids.

Did we mention that everyone's all up in Portman's business these days?

Recently engaged to choreographer Benjamin Millepied, she oh-so-ungraciously included mention of their sex life in her Golden Globes acceptance speech.

The once-private starlet is basking in the limelight thanks to critical acclaim for playing a psycho-ballerina in "Black Swan." Honestly, we think awards should go to the actors who take on roles where they have to naturally pack on the pounds, then shed them by award season. Hear that, George Clooney, Jake Gyllenhaal and Matt Damon?

Pounds or no pounds, she's likely getting more awards if "Strings" doesn't ruin her chances, as "Norbit" did for Eddie Murphy. Her laugh has also taken on a life of its own.

"The weird thing is people knowing about something that's so private," she told MTV about her pregnancy. "But I mean, you get used to it. It's just wild to walk down the street and have a complete stranger be like, 'Congratulations!'"
Remember when she captivated fanboy hearts in "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace"? Or when she was in "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium"? Or when she shaved off her locks to play Evey in "V for Vendetta"? Well, she's moved on to captivating the hearts of Hollywood heavyweights who are doling out the accolades. They must have missed the digital short when she rapped with ex-boyfriend Andy Samberg.

No Strings Attached Movie Review with trailer

Movie Review: No Strings Attached starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher (with trailer video)

Since I walked out of the theater showing No Strings Attached, I have strongly considered writing an open letter to the writers of these rom-coms. But I am pretty sure it won’t make much of a difference, and the truth is I am not sure if I want these terribly awful films to be changed. No Strings Attached is one of those movies that makes me whine about it being “soooo typical” and wishing for “a new twist.” But are there new twists? When it comes right down to it, we all know how this ends, and no girl (or guy) will pay to see a movie starring Ashton Kutcher where we don’t get the happy ending. So I sit here, torn. How do I really feel about No Strings Attached? I have no idea.

Emma (Natalie Portman) is funny and sad but she refuses to acknowledge her sadness. Adam (Ashton Kutcher) is freakishly happy and fairly normal. Boy meets girl, girl has sex with boy and that keeps happening for a while. I won’t spoil the ending, but if you have a brain and have ever seen a movie starring Matthew McConaughey, you know the rest of the story. The plot is not complex; it’s already played out on the big screen 1,001 times. Nothing about the story made me like No Strings Attached; it was essentially boring. That is not to say that at any point in the movie was I bored. I was not bored, I was actually very entertained and a little surprised by how dirty it got at points. The writing of individual scenes was strong. I want to shake the hand of the man or woman responsible for the banter between Emma’s roommates; this person is brilliant. There is one scene that involves a mix cd that still makes me giggle just thinking about it.

The acting was… well it was not bad, and most of the cast is recognizable. I spent half the film trying to figure out if one of the doctors was Wesley (Cary Elwes) from The Princess Bride (it is), Mindy Kaling is a sassy friend of Natalie Portman’s character and Guy Branum from Chelsea Lately portrays the even sassier friend. Ashton Kutcher is not going outside of his comfort zone, but he is believably sweet and the kind of man that women want to have fall in love with us. Natalie Portman’s quirky side, as we saw in Garden State, shines through for the first time in years and she does it well, making Emma extremely endearing.

If 27 Dresses and Knocked Up had a lovechild, it would be No Strings Attached. It’s not groundbreaking or profound but it is entertaining and cute. Also, did I mention that Wesley from the Princess Bride is in it? Bonus points for casting a legend.
