Ted Williams Bails on Rehab Golden Voice

'Golden Voice' Ted Williams Bails on Rehab

You’re never really an official celebrity until you’ve fled rehab against advice of your doctor. So Ted Williams, as they say on American Idol, welcome to Hollywood! Lindsay Lohan is nodding approvingly as word comes down that Williams, the formerly homeless man from Ohio with the golden radio voice, has left a rehab facility for drug and alcohol abuse. Williams had entered the facility after an appearance on the Dr. Phil Show.

Williams has been offered a full-time job and a home by the Cleveland Cavaliers, and his most recent gig was for voiceover work on a Kraft Macaroni & Cheese commercial, which is currently airing on television. The New York Daily News:

Ted Williams completed his work for us last week, and we think he did a great job,” a Kraft food spokesperson told the Christian Science Monitor an email Jan. 13. “We hope the best for him.”

Days earlier on Jan. 10, his daughter accused him of hitting her and said that he had gone on drinking binges.

“He said, ‘You, you fat [expletive],’ and when he said that, I just got angry,” Janey Williams told Dr. Phil on a later broadcast. “He’s consumed at least a bottle of Grey Goose a night, at least. That’s not including the Coronas he orders, that’s not including Budweisers he orders, that’s not including the other alcohol, the wines.”

After that incident, Williams admitted to [Dr. Phil] McGraw that he had relapsed and checked himself into the rehab center. Williams’ whereabouts since leaving rehab are unclear.

Williams’ initial media jump to light speed is over; now he must deal with the day-to-day issues of living clean and sober. Hope he makes it.

Ted Williams Rehab

Golden Voice just pulled “A Lohan…..” Ted Williams’ radio voice helped make him the biggest viral star to hit the web since Antoine Dodson spazzed out on those nasty “Bed Intruders,” but instant infamy have made coping with old vices even more of a challenge for the admitted drug addict and alcoholic.

That’s why he’s checking into rehab.

The velvet-voiced albeit yuck-mouthed homeless man (Seriously this dude’s teeth and gums could be the poster children for Wiz Khalifa’s “Black & Yellow!”) has agreed to enter an unidentified private rehabilitation treatment facility for treatment of his dependency on drugs and alcohol, producers with The Dr. Phil Show said Wednesday. Williams made the decision, with the support of his former wife and their five daughters, after receiving one-on-one counseling with the TV doc.

The rehab announcement comes just days after Ted and one of the adult daughters he abandoned 20 years ago got into a verbal spat that turned into a fist fight at the Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood. Though no arrests were made, cops did briefly detain both Dad & Daughter.

Ted’s daughter claims the former radio announcer — who has been courted for voiceover work by dozens of Fortune 500 companies ever since a clip of him “Talking for Food” went viral earlier this month — has been regularly getting drunk since his unlikely rise to fame. Turns out, she was telling the truth/ Although Williams has publicly claimed that he’s been sober for more than two years, he admitted to Dr. Phil that that was a lie. In fact, he’s been drinking daily.

“If Ted is ever going to get better, he’s got to be honest with himself and admit he’s addicted to drugs and alcohol,” says Dr. Phil. “I’ve told him it’s not going to be easy and it’s going to take a lot of hard work. It might be a long journey for him, but this is a big step in the right direction.”

Ted Williams Arrested

Ted Williams, homeless man with golden voice, on his Los Angeles arrest: My daughter hit me

Ted Williams, who became an overnight superstar because of his golden-voice, said he was arrested on Monday night after his daughter hit him at a Los Angeles hotel.

Things are rapidly devolving for the homeless man with the golden voice. Now his daughter says he drinks a bottle of vodka every night -- and he says she hits him.

Ted Williams recounted his Monday night arrest by the Los Angeles Police Department, claiming his 29-year-old daughter, Janey, hit him during a family altercation at a Hollywood hotel.

"I wanted to bring it to a close by just saying, 'Shut the hell up and let me talk to your mother,'" the 53-year-old recovering alcoholic told Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday.

Williams had been in Los Angeles to tape a number of shows, including "Entertainment Tonight" and a two-part episode of "Dr. Phil," which airs on Wednesday.

"When that was said out of my mouth, my daughter exploded -- fists got a flyin' -- none of which were mine," Williams said, showing the camera scratches on his face and nose. He said Janey kept threatening to sell his story.

Williams drew national attention earlier this month after The Columbus Dispatch aired a video of the former panhandler on a streetcorner holding a sign touting his incredible voice.

Telling her side of the altercation, Janey said her father went on a violent tirade. "He said 'You, you fat [expletive], and when he said that, I just got angry," she recounted.

She added that her father -- a former radio personality -- has turned back to the bottle since his newfound fame.

"He's consumed at least a bottle of Grey Goose a night, at least," Janey said. "That's not including the Coronas he orders, that's not including the Budweisers he orders, that's not including the other alcohol, the wines. He drinks "heavily."

After being taken from the Renaissance Hotel to the police station, Williams was eventually released after about an hour. A spokeswoman for the LAPD said no charges were pressed.

Williams denied that he was drinking again and said his daughter was simply trying to take advantage of him.

Janey, Williams said, was "selling me out on this fame and fortune ticket."

Ted Williams Not To Deal With Pressures

Ted Williams Not Equipped to Deal With Pressures of Instant Fame, Experts Say

Ted Williams' journey from homelessness to the “Today Show” made the man with the golden voice a media darling last week. But when the dust settles, what will likely be left is a man unequipped to deal with the pressure of fame and instant fortune, experts say. “Williams is the latest pawn in the media game which celebrates what is hot at the moment and leaves it behind as soon as the next ‘it’ thing comes along,” says Cooper Lawrence, author of “The Cult of Celebrity.” “The job of the media was to use Williams to get eyes on their shows, without regard for how it affects him down the road.” Just one example that the Williams’ story hasn’t been a true-life narrative unfolding in real time was the battle last week between NBC’s “Today Show” and CBS’s “The Early Show” that kept Williams from reuniting with his 90-year-old mother for 24 hours as the networks tried to get the reunion live on film. And while the public may have made Williams’ story go viral, it was the news media that elevated him to superstardom. It's this lightning-fast transformation is what could be dangerous for the very recently homeless man. “I think there is a real danger,” says Elizabeth Currid-Halkett, author of “Starstruck: The Business of Celebrity,” comparing Williams to “Britain’s Got Talent” winner Susan Boyle, who was hospitalized for depression exhaustion following her win on the musical competition in 2009. “The fame can be too much to handle. Stars who rise in the Hollywood system have the protection of an entire infrastructure of publicists and managers and agents. People like Williams and Boyle are on their own. It was clear there was no one giving Williams career or management advice when he gave out his cell phone number on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” during his appearance last Thursday night. “How do they get a hold of you?” Fallon asked Williams about how people looking to hire him could reach him. Williams then recited his cell phone number, which NBC later bleeped out. “I don’t have a website or anything like that,” Williams explained. Moreover, a man in Williams’ position, a recovering addict who has been living on the streets, is even more vulnerable than someone like Boyle, who was propped up by the “Britain’s Got Talent” publicity machine. Homeless advocates, while cheering for Williams to succeed, say they have concerns about whether he will be able to maintain his sobriety. “Williams’ disease of addiction needs to be recognized as well as the fact that we could now have to watch something profoundly sad happen to him,” Neil Donovan, the Executive Director of the National Coalition for the Homeless told FOX411. “Radical changes in lifestyle without a strong support system can hurt someone in recovery. If I were his case manager I would say there are red flags all over the place.” And while Williams’ case has certainly raised the profile of the issue of homelessness this past week, advocates say getting one man off an exit ramp shouldn’t be enough to make Americans feel good about helping the homeless. “The solution to homelessness is not giving everybody a YouTube video. Williams is only one visible face of homelessness, the family of five living in a cockroach infested motel is the face of homelessness we don't see,” says Mark Horvath, the formerly homeless mind behind Invisible People TV, a website that broadcasts videos of real-life homelessness. “What I hope is that Ted Williams uses this fame and his beautiful voice for advocacy on behalf of all homeless.”

Ted Williams: Will Fame Hurt Him?

Ted Williams, quite recently, was a homeless panhandler standing on the side of the street in Columbus, Ohio, until he was discovered by a reporter who made a video of Williams demonstrating his “golden pipes.” Since the video was put online, it's lured more than 13 million hits.

As a result, Williams has been bombarded with job offers, voiced ads for Kraft Mac & Cheese, and been reunited with his mother, Julia Williams, 90, of Brooklyn, as well as several of what he says are nine children he fathered.

But Williams’ past has come out, which includes drug and alcohol addictions and a criminal record, and is raising concern that his sudden stardom and could lead him "off the wagon."

"This overnight stardom, for anyone, even somebody who had a completely perfectly clean past, could be an issue," said "Early Show on Saturday Morning" co-anchor Rebecca Jarvis.

"Absolutely," agreed "Early Show" contributor Dr. Jennifer Hartstein, a psychologist. "Look at all these reality television stars we watch all the time and their lives unfold in front of us, too, and then they go down these paths (on which) they don't know what to do with their fame. And here's someone who does have a troubled past. So, we really need to hope and pray that he continues to take this second chance and … use that for the good and really turn his life around and keep it that way."
