Glee, Boardwalk, Empire sweep Golden Globes' TV categories
Chris Colfer won Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series
It was a changing of the guard at the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards, with first-time nominees scooping up awards in the TV categories. The Golden Globes, which took place Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles, recognized new talent, as well as movie stars who’ve transitioned to the small screen.
HBO’s prohibition drama, Boardwalk Empire, won big in the TV drama categories, scoring the Best Drama award, while Steve Buscemi won the Drama Lead Actor trophy, beating past winners Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Michael C. Hall (Dexter).
Film actress-turned-TV-star Laura Linney scooped up the award for Best Actress in a Television Musical or Comedy for her role as a cancer victim whose diagnosis liberates her emotionally in Showtime’s The Big C.
Glee swept the TV comedy categories, winning the Best TV Series, Musical or Comedy category and awarding acting trophies to stars Jane Lynch and Chris Colfer. A visibly moved Colfer dedicated his award to kids who are being bullied. "Mostly importantly [thanks] to all to all the amazing kids that watch our show and … are constantly told 'no' [by] people and environments and bullies at school, that they can't be who they are or can't have what they want because of who they are. Well, screw that, kids."
In a surprise win, Sons of Anarchy’s Katey Sagal won the Best TV Drama Lead Actress award, beating out favourites Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife) and Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer).
In the miniseries categories, biopics reigned. Claire Danes won the Best Actress award for Temple Grandin, while Al Pacino won the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Jack Kevorkian in You Don't Know Jack. “It’s great for actors who portray real characters,” said Pacino. “It’s really a special thing for an actor when you portray a real person, because that relationship is so interesting and wonderful.”
The Golden Globes celebrate the year’s best in film and television, and are voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
