Heidi the Cross-Eyed Opossum Is an Internet Superstar
Find out why the four-legged creature has more Facebook friends than you.A cross-eyed opossum named Heidi has no idea that she's kind of a big deal right now.
With more than 133,000 likes on her Facebook page and about the same amount of YouTube views, admirers from California to China think she's the cutest thing since sliced bread, and we agree. Already, she has her own song, movie trailer and website.
Not only is she a ham, but she shares the irresistible "rags to riches" storyline of one of Tonic's favorite recent viral video stars — the golden-voiced homeless man, Ted Williams. Williams went from recovering panhandler to media darling in less than a week after a clip of his great voice hit the web. Similarly, Heidi was also homeless when she was left outside an animal shelter in North Carolina. Now she's the hottest thing at the Leipzig Zoo in Germany.
Germans must love their silly animals, because this isn't the first time the country's gone bananas over a four-legged, or eight-tentacled, creature. In 2007, Knut, the polar bear cub from the Berlin Zoo, became an international star with over two million YouTube hits, and this past spring Paul the octopus was the talk of the tank as he kept correctly predicting the outcome of World Cup games. It must be something in their water ... or beer.
Heidi will go on view to the public in July.
