2011 Detroit Auto Show: Porsche 918 RSR
We love the phrase "experimental racing laboratory." Well, at least we do when it's a cool future-tech race car and not some roving meth lab. Good thing, then, that the Porsche 918 RSR-- shown today at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show-- is of the hyper-tech race car persuasion fitted with a mid-mounted, direct-injected V8 producing 563 horsepower to a six-speed racing transmission.
But that's not very experimental. Let's try adding an electric motor at each of the front wheels. That should help. It should also make the 918 RSR capable, in short bursts, of producing 767 horsepower. The electricity used to power these motors is derived from a kinetic energy recovery system with a flywheel accumulator mounted where the passenger seat would be in less experimental cars. We've seen the same technology used in the 911 GT3 R Hybrid racer.
