While the Globes aspire to be the Oscars, its mere a high-profile preliminary round. But that doesn't mean that they didn't glam it up. This was still a big night with two goals, to bring home the golden statue and NOT end up on any worst dressed lists.
Felix Mercado, celebrity style expert and president and owner of Say it With STYLE, saw a number of trends on the red carpet Sunday night, including the usual dominance of black gowns. Among those who chose safety in basic black were "Glee" star Jayma Mays in a sheer, cut-out dress; Eva Langoria in Zac Posen; Jennifer Lawrence in Louis Vuitton; Piper Perabo in Oscar De La Renta; Melissa Leo in a sequin stunner and Julieanne Hough in a simple style with a bejeweled neck - "a great compliment to a simple dress," Mercado says.
Here are some of the other trends Mercado spotted :
Pink Dresses. Pink - in every shade from peony to bubblegum - was as ubiquitous as black on the 2011 Golden Globes red carpet. Among those looking pretty in pink were Kelly Cuoco accenting her gown with Chopard Jewels; Kathrine Kidd in a pink so pale it was almost nude; Natalie Portman in a strapless Victor and Rolf; "Glee" star Naya Rivera who draws Kim Kardashian comparisons; Lea Michele in Oscar De La Renta; Megan Fox wearing Armani Prive; and "Glee" actress Dianna Agron in a nude J Mendel gown "that was a little on the bridal side." Mercado also says her hair would have been better up or pulled back.
Green Dresses. Not as plentiful as pink, green dresses made a stunning accent on the red capet. Among those in green were: "Black Swan" star Mila Kunis; "Mad Men" actress Elizabeth Moss in Donna Karan; Catherine Zeta-Jones in a strapless Monique Lhuillier stunner; and an "absolutely breathtaking" Angelina Jolie in stunning green Versace.
Statement Shoes. Instead of accessorizing, some of the footwear dominated, Mercado says. "Helena Bonham Carter wearing two different color shoes... OMG!!!" He also said Olivia Wilde's gold Christian Louboutin's were way off in style and color
Simple Hairdos Most stars kept their hair simple, primarily in updo's or pulled back a la Natalie Portman in "Black Swan."
