What an emotional day following the horrific and tragic shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Arizona, and the death or injury of 18 others. Pima Sheriff Clarence Dupnik gives voice to what has concerned me for years -- vitriolic, hateful rhetoric that permeates far too much of our public discourse.
MSNBC's Keith Olbermann delivered an excellent commentary on the subject as well that included taking responsibility for a comment he directed at Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her 2008 bid for the White House. Violence has no place in our political process, and must be soundly denounced by individuals on all sides of the political debate.
This includes calling out violence comments on our own blogs and social network sites. Until everyone takes responsibility the rhetoric won't end.
I urge everyone to repeat after me: "The power to END violence BEGINS with ME."
Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik Does Not Believe Gabrielle Giffords Shooter Jared Loughner Acted Alone; Seeking A Second "Person Of Interest"
A major update in the case of the shooting of Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, first discussed in this post, has been reported by Azfamily.com. In this story, Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik expresses the belief that the suspect in custody, Jared Loughner, did not act alone despite the fact that Loughner told them he did act alone. Consequently, they're seeking a second person of interest, who has been described only as a white male in his 50s. Specific Azfamily.com news video for this story embedded below:
The latest tally indicates a total of 19 people were shot. Six were killed, including a child and Federal Judge John Roll. Rep. Giffords was taken to University Medical Center in Tucson where brain surgery was performed. She is now in critical condition in the intensive care unit and has been responding to doctors' commands. Dr. Peter Rhee of UMC said he was very optimistic about Giffords' recovery, described Giffords' wound as "through and through", and said the next 24 hours would be critical. Dr. Rhee also said UMC has 10 patients from the shooting; at least five of them are in critical condition.
Investigators said they have recovered the Glock 19 that was used in the shooting. Law-enforcement officials said that the semi-automatic pistol was legally purchased at Sportsman's Warehouse in Tucson on November 30th, 2010.
