Todd Graham Expected to Coach Pitt
Todd Graham will reportedly take over the Pitt coaching job after a long offseason that saw the Panthers hire Mike Haywood, only to fire him a little after two weeks on the job.According to FOX23, multiple sources say Graham, the coach at Tulsa, has an offer from Pitt on the table and is ready to accept. One source told the station that it's "a done deal." It's not completely done, however, as the station reports that Graham is giving Tulsa a chance to counter-offer. Another hold-up could be Graham's wife, Penni, who loves Tulsa.
Graham is 36-17 in four years at Tulsa, and 43-23 in his head coaching career, which includes a one-year stop at Rice.
After Dave Wannstedt stepped down as Pitt coach in December, former Miami (OH) coach Mike Haywood was hired to replace him. Fifteen days later, Haywood was arrested on charges of domestic violence, and fired the next day.
"To be clear, the University's decision is not tied to any expectation with respect to the terms on which the legal proceeding now pending in Indiana might ultimately be concluded," University of Pittsburgh Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg said in a statement at the time of Haywood's firing. "Instead, it reflects a strong belief that moving forward with Mr. Haywood as our head coach is not possible under the existing circumstances.
"This is a matter of real regret for the many people at Pitt who had looked forward to working with him. However, head coaches are among the University's most visible representatives and are expected to maintain high standards of personal conduct and to avoid situations that might reflect negatively on the University.
"We will immediately re-open our search for a head football coach, expanding the process to include a larger pool of candidates. Our goal is to move swiftly, but prudently, to find the right person to successfully lead the Pitt football program for what we hope will be an extended period of time."
