Dhobi Ghat 2011 Bollywood Movie Review AND Trailer

Review: With Dhobi Ghat, Kiran Rao makes her directorial debute and certainly she lives up to the expectations from a typical Aamir Khan Production movie. Earlier movies like Jaane tu ya Jaane na, Peepli Live etc., the audiences have build up high hopes from this venture too and Kiran Rao does a promising job. She comes out as an excellent story teller and she handles the movie very intelligently.

The movie depicts the story of four characters, all living in Mumbai. The movie intricately unfolds the dreams, their aspirations, and ambitions of the characters. How they come across each other and how they find solutions to their problems of life. Though, symbolically, Mumbai stands out as the fifth character in the movie. Mumbai silently watches the trajectory each character goes through. The name of the movie is apt as Dhobi Ghat(Mumbai Diaries) which ends up being more of a video diary about the characters in the hustle bustle of Mumbai.

All the four characters are very real with their real stories, which give the movie more authenticity and substance. Small bits have been taken up from their lives and made up as a complete movie. Stronger emotions like, yearning, defeat, rage has been portrayed excellently by the actors. Monica Dogra and Kriti Malhotra, who make their debut with this movie, were brilliant in their performance. It was hard to digest the fact that Dhobi Ghat was their first so ever movie. Prateik is exceptionally good in the movie. His unconventional looks add onto his character. He is at his emotional best in the last scene of the movie, where he chases Shai’s car. He is coming out as a much dependable actor and definitely a star in making. While Aamir allows himself to take a backseat and let these new comers take the show, as he did in Taare Zammen Par.

Kiran Rao tells her story emphatically in95 minutes which shows her genius as a director. She stands up to be the like of Mira Nair and Deepa Mehta.

Dhobi Ghat is definitely an outstanding movie. It didn’t follow the clichéd movie angles and was natural in shooting with hand cameras.

Dhobi Ghat comes out as a new age cinema, with a perfect mix of art house and commercial vibes.
