Should Douglas County schools start a voucher program? (6 letters)
Editor’s note: Eighth-graders at Rocky Heights Middle School in Highlands Ranch have been discussing the issue of vouchers in the Douglas County School District and wrote these letters to the editor. They have been edited for length and clarity.
I feel that the option certificate program, or vouchers, that has been proposed recently in Douglas County is not a good option.
This year Douglas County cut $36 million from their budget, and 264 jobs. I feel that the option certificate program is essentially taking away money from the district and putting it in private schools’ pockets. Why do private schools need more money?
Douglas County is one of the most affluent counties in Colorado. What do we need money for? If parents want to send their kids to private schools, and not to some of the top-rated public schools in Colorado, they can usually pay for it, and if not, financial aid is almost always available for those who need it.
Lastly, a similar issue was ruled unconstitutional in 2003, so why now?

I want to attend a religious private school next year.
Religious schools keep teens focused on kindness, respect, citizenship, morality and academics. Some private schools separate boys and girls, which can improve studies and self-esteem.
I agree with the vouchers for the Douglas County School District. I would like to go to Regis next year, but my parents can’t afford to send me.
The voucher program would make it possible for kids like me to be able to choose what school they want to go to, private or public.

I think that Douglas County schools are the best in the state; however; I know that some families feel like they need choice. Well, we have a choice here in Douglas County such as charter schools and Christian schools. I don’t think our tax dollars should be used for [private] schools. If a family wants to go to these schools, they need to pay for it separately.
Our school district recently went through major cuts in the budget, which impacted all students in Douglas County Schools. The voucher program would only create more cuts that would impact our teachers in the classroom. I am proud to be going to Douglas County schools, but I feel that the school district should concentrate on keeping our schools healthy and supporting our teachers.

As the last year of middle school slowly passes by, I am faced with the decision of which school to go to. The choice of private or public schools are very helpful to those students wanting to focus on a certain subject or to practice a religion.
But the problem with private schools is that they are expensive, and the voucher program would allow any child to go to a private school if they want. I support this.
As for who gets to use the vouchers, let those of lower income be first to use them.

Douglas County is examining starting a voucher program. I am against it, because I believe it will hurt our schools immensely.
By starting a voucher program I think more students will move to private schools. This would cause our public schools to lose even more money.
Why is the voucher program necessary if students are happy with the schools they are in now? Ninety-eight percent of parents are happy. Why should we change? No other school district in Colorado has a voucher program.

I enjoyed the Denver Post editorial concerning the proposed Douglas County School District voucher program (“Why not talk about vouchers?” Nov. 6). I’m in support of this because it will inspire competition and raise the overall level of education.
The kids that come from lesser income families should have the option of going to a private school. If this doesn’t happen, then the next generation of Americans will not be as smart as the last because the education level has diminished over the years.
Douglas County is considering a voucher program for students to be able to attend private religious schools. The voucher program would give parents 75 percent of the per pupil funds. This is a good thing because they know for sure that their money will go to the school of their choice.
