Eucalyptus Targets Asia

Eucalyptus Systems (see previous CloudAve coverage), the academic project turned commercial vendors that helps enterprises build private clouds, is now focussing on the Asian markets. In 2010, Eucalyptus focussed on releasing their new version and strengthening their partnerships with companies like Redhat, rPath and newScale. They are turning their attention in 2011 to target newer markets. When I spoke with Eucalyptus in mid-December, they stressed on their plans to push forward in many new markets. Asian markets appears to be the first one on their sight and a right choice too.

We are seeing Asian countries going big on their cloud computing plans. China is far ahead in the game and South Korea is also pushing ahead with public cloud offerings from their largest Telecom operator. We have seen India trying to embrace cloud computing last year but they are still lagging behind other Asian giants. It is expected to change in 2011. Clearly, Asian markets are hot for cloud computing and some players like Cloud.com and Enomaly are already well positioned in these markets.

Even though Cloud.com and Enomaly are also playing in the enterprise space, I have only heard of some big wins with the service providers in Asia (Note to vendors: If I am wrong, I would like to get briefed about it). Eucalyptus’ primary focus is with enterprises and I would expect a tough competition from Eucalyptus Systems in that space. As a first step, Eucalyptus Systems has opened an office in Beijing, China with an aim to rapidly expand in that market. An IDC report predicts a large scale cloud migration in this region in 2011 and a presence by Eucalyptus in the market is crucial. It will be interesting to see how this market shapes up in 2011.
