Herschel Walker Prepares For MMA With Grueling Fitness Routine
Herschel Walker, a former football player, follows a strict fitness regime as he ventures into a new sport - mixed martial arts.
The college football hall-of-famer made his professional MMA debut almost a year ago, when he defeated Greg Nagy.
Now Walker, 48, will make his second MMA - officially known as Strikeforce - appearance.
In readiness for the competition, Walker wakes up at 4:30 A.M. and goes for at least a 4-mile run before breakfast, reports Yahoo! Sports.
Still on an empty stomach, Walker then does a daily workout at the American Kickboxing Academy gym, in San Jose.
When he's completed his training he has his one meal for the day - usually something simple that doesn't include red meat or fish - and then he does a second round of training.
As to why he puts himself through this grueling routine, he tells Yahoo! Sports:
“I love the sport, the training, and these guys train as hard as any athletes in the world.
“I want to help the sport grow. If somebody watches the show to see me fight, they may become new fans of the sport.”
Walker's upcoming fight takes place on January 29, 2011, when he takes on Scott Carson.
