Syracuse Tops St. John's 76-59 in Big East Men's College Basketball Game
Syracuse University remained undefeated with a 76-59 defeat of St. John’s University in a Big East men’s college basketball contest at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Kris Joseph scored 18 points and Brandon Triche added 15 points last night for Syracuse, which improved to 17-0 overall and 4-0 in the Big East. St. John’s dropped to 10-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
Syracuse shot 56 percent from the field and held the Red Storm to 38 percent shooting. Justin Brownlee had 13 points to lead St. John’s. The Orange used a 16-1 run in the first half to take control of the game.
“We missed a lot of shots due to their pressure,” St. John’s forward Justin Burrell told reporters. “They have a way to frustrate you, and we’re supposed to play through that.”
It was the 1,800th victory in Syracuse history, fifth on the major-college list behind Kentucky, North Carolina, Kansas and Duke.
The 17 straight wins give Syracuse the second-longest winning streak to open a season in school history, trailing only the 19-0 record of the 1999-2000 team.
The Orange are one of four undefeated major-college teams in the country this season, along with Ohio State, Kansas and San Diego State. Duke, the defending national champion, lost for the first time last night, falling 66-61 at Florida State.
The University of Pittsburgh and Villanova University also maintained perfect Big East records, moving to 4-0 in conference play.
Pitt is 16-1 overall after a 72-57 win against Georgetown University at the Verizon Center in Washington.
Villanova moved to 15-1 overall with an 88-74 win against the Louisville Cardinals at The Pavilion in Villanova, Pennsylvania.
