At least, according to John.
After the "Tiny Dancer" singer slammed Joel's approach to treating his alcoholism in comments published in "Rolling Stone," Joel publicly said he wasn't bothered by them.
"I've enjoyed our relationship too much to let something as random as these comments change my affection for him," Joel said in a statement at the time. "Elton is just being Elton."
But in an appearance on the Today Show Thursday, John said that privately Joel had much harsher words for his old friend and touring partner.
"He hates me at the moment," John said. "He sent me a message and he's not happy. I understand that. I'm sorry I had to say it, but I'm saying it because I really want Billy to live a long life and be very happy. That's all it came from. I understand why he's mad at me. I'm only trying to help. Maybe I should have done it privately, but I've been so frustrated over the years."
In the article, John said that Joel's rehab was "rehab light."
"You've got to be serious," he said in the article, in comments directed at his friend. "People adore you, they love you and respect you. You should be able to do something better than what you're doing now."
In that article, John said Joel was "coasting."
"I always say, 'Billy, can't you write another song?' It's either fear or laziness," he said. "It upsets me. Billy's a conundrum. We've had so many cancelled tours because of illnesses and various other things, alcoholism."
According to public reports, Joel has not been in rehab since 2005.
